OCTAEVO, in a few words? What does this name reflect and mean?

OCTAEVO is a Barcelona-based design studio that designs uplifting everyday objects, steeped in Mediterranean philosophy.
The name OCTAEVO comes from the combination of two words, one Greek and one Latin. "Octa" refers to the eight main winds that form the eight-wind compass rose, a tool used by sailors. "Evo" derives from the Latin "Aevum", referring to the middle between time and eternity - the state of saints in heaven. The 'O' refers to the coastline - the idea of starting a journey and returning to where you started. I love leaving, but coming home is always equally enjoyable.

With a real graphic bias, where do you draw your inspiration from? What was your course ?
I studied graphic design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Graphic Design in London and soon after started working for various design agencies in London and New York on projects for globally recognized brands in the fields of fashion, beauty and the arts. In 2008 I moved to Barcelona. At that time, I worked with many start-ups, which fueled my desire to start my own business. I'm often inspired by stories and I've always been interested in history and travel, discovering new places, diving into the unknown. Inspiration for me is very much related to everyday objects and certain moments; sometimes it's just a shadow, interesting architecture; an exhibition or simply a combination of colors that catch my eye. Photography and illustrations are also a great source of inspiration, again, it's about diving into another world and another story.

Strong Mediterranean influences, contrasting antique figures with very contemporary features, what is your secret for this just mix of genres?

The starting point for all designs is an enchanting story or an inspiring artefact from the Mediterranean. I like to create objects that have meaning, pieces that resonate with our soul. While the inspiration for a product may come from ancient mythology (eg the face of the Roman god Janus, our signature design), the final design is always minimal and contemporary. This good mix is also reflected in the materials chosen, always seeking the perfect balance between cutting-edge technology and craftsmanship.

Particularly recognized for your out-of-this-world paper vases, where did this idea come from?
The original idea of the vase was inspired by recycling plastic bottles in an original and creative way. They are eye-catching objects to adorn a desk or a dining table and can also be used as a thoughtful and original gift. Made of water-resistant paper, the vases are printed with elaborate designs, hand-stitched and stamped with gold foil. Simply slide the paper vases over a plastic bottle or glass container and add the flowers! The possibilities of paper are endless… it's such a versatile material, it's easy to print and environmentally friendly.

Using bright colors nicely, what tips would you recommend for a bright and inspiring home?

Surprisingly, my house is very minimalist with very few colors. The important thing is always plenty of natural light. I love almost empty spaces in warm shades of white and beige. However, I like to add disparate color accents. It can be flowers, gifts from friends or souvenirs from travels… only a few.

A place in Barcelona that represents you to recommend?
The “Teatre Grec”, an open-air theater in the Montjuïc mountain. It is located in a beautiful park with a superb view of the city. That's wonderful.
